As far as pre-made USB soundcards that use these IC's go, yes it is seemingly more difficult to find such things. The CM-108 was selected, because, at the time, it was by far the most common IC found in such devices and was of EXTREMELY high quality, reliability, and consistency (not to mention VERY good value!).
Nowadays, is there once again, a generalized consensus focused upon some new, different, IC, or are all the available (and inexpensive) USB sound cards pretty much just random?? I haven't, nor have I had time to even look lately. If there is, perhaps it would be worthwhile to see if whatever this device is meets the requirements for this application.
If there is something worth checking out, I am not adverse to doing so.

Or do you think the CM108 will be available for years to come? I'm under the impression they're getting harder & harder to actually

JUST DONT DO IT!!! There is a reason that we dont support regular sound cards. THEY DONT WORK WORTH A POO! They sound terrible, and are inconsistent. Friends dont let friends use internal soundcards to interface to radio systems.

I have been having a heck of a time trying to find a fob with a cm108 chip in it. I have 5 fobs here all from different suppliers and none of them have the right chip even though they were listed as a cm108.
I had seen a alsaradio channel driver and tried that but it errors our asterisk with a 127 error. Is there anything out there so
that
we can use serial/soundcard interfacing instead of a fob or the expensive quad card?
