I'm curious about chan_simpleusb. Can it be used on a slower PC to improve performance? I'm running 2 CM108 fobs here on a P3/866 MHz with 512MB ram. This was my old EchoIRLP node PC, and it seems to work ok for Allstar, but I realize that it's below the recommended CPU speed for a USB fob node. My node radios have PL encode/decode in hardware, etc, so would I lose any functionality by switching to chan_simpleusb? Thanks.73 Kyle K0KN --- Original Message ---Yes, it works quite beautifuly with the URI, in fact it will support 2 of them *BUT* only with chan_simpleusb. The CPU does not have the horsepower to do the DSP routines used in chan_usbradio. Why dont you wait for the LOX board to become available in production? It wont be long. JIM WB6NIL
chan_simpleusb is basically a 'gutted' version of chan_usbradio. It has no DSP functionality whatsoever. It is designed for radios that provide COR and/or CTCSS detection signals, and will run FAR more efficiently allowing for use on MUCH slower CPUs. Thanks Jim! I read your reply *after* I asked.. sorry I missed it. Do you also lose CTCSS encode or any kind of encode/tone /playback features? I imagine encode functions are far simpler and basically lookup tables or bitmap or PCM data. -Steve

So does this mean you can run App_rpt & Asterisk on the WRT 54GL???? Dont get me wrong, It would be great to run App_Rpt on the 54 GL. I have a number of them. But how would you do a radio interface? I dont see any USB ports on any of my 54GLs. I'm playing around with the Intel D510 MB with a 32 G SSD and have 3 Allstar nodes running on the board with URIs in full duplex with DSP Squelch and PL. I had 4 on there and it seemed ok but the load ave hit 1.2! so I took out one node and now seems ok with the 3. Perhaps using chan_simpleUSB might clear that up. Nice low power package but cost a few bucks~($325 CDN) but solid package and yes there is a fan in the enclosure so heat doesnt seem to be a problem. But I would like to know about what you had in mind on the 54GL. Jon VA3RQ On 2/15/2011 1:44 PM, Steve Gladden wrote:

Chan_simpleusb *DOES* support DTMF. All channel drivers do. Supporting it has nothing to do with the channel driver. Zaptel and app_rpt WONT RUN ON MOST LOW-END ARCHITECTURES. Especially the Blackfin and the MIPS. It wont work in a Linsys router. Also, Jon, remember that a load average of 1.2 on a dual-core system is only 60% of the CPU, *NOT* 120%. Im suprised that it was that loaded with 4 devices. It really shoudnt be. JIM

Also a HUGE mungus thank you for adding the Parallel Port stuff!!! It's nice to have the option to use PTT/COR from that versus having to do the SMT soldering job (even though I've got pretty good at it) ;-) And I'm very big on using remote control of things at the site and remote monitoring of stuff via the input pins. Thank You! Thank You Thank You!!! :-) I might play with serial port pin manipulation just to give myself a fun simple project. I really feel a desire to dive into the code and play. Steve
