We had a scenario that occurred late Saturday night early Sunday Morning where the repeater locked its self wide open for over 18 hrs solid with no id’s according to witnesses I was away sleeping dealing with some medical on this end.. When we found out about it we immediately tuned to the frequency and found that the repeater was indeed locked open. I had Mark run out to the repeater site to shut it down and bring home the allstarlink box.. No signs of damage to motherboard ram or ssd we did look through the logs and couldn’t find anything that would even remotely cause a stuck ptt.. We were able to get the Archive directory downloaded since it was a separate drive and after looking through it.. Nothing showed their either.. Any ideas anyone? Anyone ever had this happen? This machine was Debian distro and was one of the earlier installations of the debian install .. It was up and running for almost 2 years no issues.. Reboots once every week. We had this happen once with the RPi with DIAL. Sometimes computers hang-up, and if they are in transmit mode... oh well. We are installing a simplex radio with a simple controller that will allow us to manually reboot the processor; an independent watchdog timer would work as well, but we also want to use the controller to report temperature. What is being used for the radio adapter? If a URI or something similar, was the heartbeat LED flashing in this "stuck state"? On 4/23/2018 10:22 AM, Loren Tedford wrote:

Good point Keven! We are using DmKeng URIx for both repeaters on the computer.. At the time of arrival out at the repeater site.. 2 meter repeater was not stuck in the open position but the UHF repeater was stuck open with Red light on on the URIx I do not believe the green heart beat was flashing we think it was solid.. Mark doesn’t remember other than the red led was solid.. There are no versions of Asterisk/app_rpt along with hardware that are stable enough to prevent this condition from ever happening. You may want to consider a radio adapter that disables the PTT when the application has crashed or stopped, there's a hardware malfunction, or a communications issue with the radio adapter. The URI doesn't currently have this functionality, but there are several others that do. Kevin
I haven't had a stuck PTT on either AllStar controller. But, I do have a DTMF command that executes a Linux reboot. In rpt.conf it looks like ... 81234=cmd,/sbin/reboot It seems to work OK. It might work on PTT stuck if the receiver is still listening and some of the software is functional. ...STeve - KF5VH On 4/23/2018 10:04 AM, Kevin Custer wrote:

If its supported, you might want to configure a Timeout Timer (TOT) on the repeater. This way even if the PTT is activated for long periods, the radio will stop transmitting after the timer expires. On Mon, Apr 23, 2018 at 4:51 PM, Steve Mahler <kizzy@lusfiber.net> wrote:

Most of the exciters I use in repeater service, or hot spot for matter, have a TOT in the firmware. I crank them all the way up. Sometimes that is not as long as I would like but I feel better. As Kevin says, there are USB radio interfaces available with timers. The rules in the US may have changed but I remember a time when a repeater required a control channel on 220 MHz and above. But I'm old (licensed in 1969) and things change. The "belt and suspenders" approach can be a good thing. 73, Steve N4IRS On 4/23/2018 12:15 PM, 2E0SIP wrote:

Steve and the group: It is still in the rules. Control has been broadened beyond a control radio to include fiber optic, telco, and wireline (to include internet). the radio can be any amateur frequency now, no longer required to be above 220 MHz.I believe you are referencing line (b): §97.213 Telecommand of an amateur station. An amateur station on or within 50 km of the Earth's surface may be under telecommand where: (a) There is a radio or wireline control link between the control point and the station sufficient for the control operator to perform his/her duties. If radio, the control link must use an auxiliary station. A control link using a fiber optic cable or another telecommunication service is considered wireline. (b) Provisions are incorporated to limit transmission by the station to a period of no more than 3 minutes in the event of malfunction in the control link. (c) The station is protected against making, willfully or negligently, unauthorized transmissions. (d) A photocopy of the station license and a label with the name, address, and telephone number of the station licensee and at least one designated control operator is posted in a conspicuous place at the station location. That’s great Steve!! We thought we had our bases covered as well! We had dual network points provided to the repeater system.. The repeater is connected via Verizon Wireless through 4G LTE and backup systems range not only from DTMF commands to reset the system if needed but direct wifi point to point as well again our system still failed and required an onsite visit to shut the system down.. I suppose what I am saying is that you can have all the dedicated access you want to your site including dtmf controls and things do fail.. The bigger question to answer everything is why did the vpn portion of the service fail why did onsite Broadband connections fail why did the system lock open and become unresponsive.. As far as maintaining control of the system one can only do so much.. I am not going to pay some one to set at the repeater site for two years while we wait for it to fail again.. Its just not cost prohibitive in an Amateur radio hobby although everything has its expense example Verizon 60 a month Dedicated Broadband connection 80 a month Data center to manage the entire vpn services along with data center hub 90 a month.. again data center side never failed.. only the repeater its self failed.. In fact the system seemed to hang up the 41715 connection prior to the incident.. Which is odd.. Anyway thanks Steve for your thoughts on this! We will continue to look for better ways of controlling our Allstarlink system however I feel that having two dedicated internet access points to the system should have been enough.. I agree with Kevin. He was very carefully not mentioning the RA-35 which is produced by a company under his supervision, but I can! The RA35 and it's successors are absolutely great products! They have a heartbeat monitor that magically ('cause I don't know how) monitor asterisk, and kill the PTT enable if the RA-35 does not 'sense' asterisk. Before I made the switch to DIAL, I was using Limey Linux, the real embedded solution that does not kill SD cards or care how many times there are abrupt power "disconnects", it just works. Mind you, Limey came out and stopped being maintained *before* the CM119 started to get used. But I wanted to see if it would work. In this particular case either Limey or the thin client I was using did not like the CM119 on the RA-35, and after a while, asterisk stopped working... or something. Just so happened asterisk or something other in the thin client USB hardware would die when I am in the middle of an ASL conversation. The RA-35 did it's job, the heartbeat LED extinguished and the node radio transmitted no more until I pulled the power, and plugged the node back in. A laptop with a whirly spinny thingy using DIAL and an RA-35, I'm care free. Until *I* break it. ~Benjamin, KB9LFZ
Yeah I couldn’t get DTMF to pass to the repeater to do an old fashioned reboot to the system.. We might just have to put a tot timer back on the cm200’s What concerns me about this is how random it occurred again we had no issues up until Sunday makes me wonder if its not hardware that has gone bad some where along the line in process.. At the moment I am using another motherboard and processor along with new sticks of ram and a different SSD.. Considering doing some test over the next week prior to putting my repeaters back online.. If you wish to sort through what I have recovered and give me your thoughts and opinions of what went wrong please do! Here is the information that I have gathered.. DIAL 8.x on a dell latitude 530 laptop and RA-35 in the last three years of running, never once was there an issue with ASL that I did not cause. RPi's are great and all that, I guess, but, duuuuude, they suck for reliability! if I were to throw darts, I would venture to say 85% of the issues here and "there" and directly RPi and crappy sound fob IC related. By *NO* means is this discrediting the authors of ASL, a lot of work has been put forth to deal with silly Pi's... aka SD card eaters! Saving 20W of power is not worth the headache. ~Benjamin, KB9LFZ On Mon, 2018-04-23 at 16:58 -0400, David McGough wrote:

Benjamin, LOL.... I think you missed the original post. See: http://lists.allstarlink.org/pipermail/app_rpt-users/2018-April/018382.html This discussion was about an embedded PC with these specs (NOT an RPi2/3): Computer type and information: Intel Atom D2700 @ 2.13GHz Memory 4GB Intel SSD Pico Power Supply 12 As embedded systems go, that would appear to be a very reasonable setup. I've got many with roughly the same specs. And, in general, they don't skip a beat. As for RPi3B boards, well, I've replaced all my embedded AllStar PC's at this point. And, the RPi3B's don't skip a beat either. In fact, I'm seeing even better reliability with the Pi's than with the PC's. But, it didn't start out that way. I figured where the weaknesses were with the RPi systems and solved those problems. Now, my RPi3B boards run until I reboot them, wherever they're located...Like this system at the top of a TV tower: [root@repeater-444850 asterisk]# uptime 22:10:13 up 183 days, 10:58, 1 user, load average: 0.12, 0.05, 0.03 [root@repeater-444850 asterisk]# cpu_stats.sh Current CPU stats ----------------- cpuinfo_cur_freq = 1200 MHz. cpuinfo_max_freq = 1200 MHz. cpuinfo_min_freq = 1200 MHz. cpuinfo_transition_latency = 355000 cpu frequency ondemand up threshold = 95 cpu frequency scaling governor = ondemand Current CPU Temperature = 41C / 105F Core volt=1.2500V sdram core volt=1.2000V sdram I/O volt=1.2000V sdram PHY volt=1.2250V BogoMIPS : 38.40 X 4 CORES 73, David KB4FXC On Mon, 23 Apr 2018, Benjamin Naber wrote:
