Have you confirmed the GPS is set to output in NEMA format and not "Garmin"? -- Sent from my Android phone with K-9 Mail. Please excuse my brevity.
That was it! I downloaded the Garmin config program. Updated the software on the GPS 18X LVC Configured it for NMEA output. And now it works, no error messages. The Garmin protocol looks similar to NMEA so I didn't catch that there was a difference. Thanks Robert! Randy W3RWN / VE3RWN On Thu, Jun 13, 2013 at 6:55 AM, Robert a. Well, that's great Randy glad that I was of some help. I've seen lots of guys on sailing email lists get bit by the same thing when interfacing instruments to Garmin. Good luck. Bob, WB3AWJ Allstar 27784 Randy Neals <randy@neals.ca> wrote:

Very odd.. My Garmin pucks did NMEA right out of the box. They also had the old (2 years ago) firmware that "lost" a second right around XMAS/New Years. I updated them. Puck-ing things!
