So... my RPi3's are in. I also bought a couple of 32gb SDcards. Stopped by a Walmart (love laughing at the Walmartians, anyway) and picked up an HDMI-to-VGA adapter for the monitor I have for this project, a new 7' ethernet hose, dd'ed the RAT_RC1.img to the sdcard, dd bs=1M if=/home/geoff/Downloads/RAT_RC1/RAT_RC1.img of=/dev/sdb1 3000+0 records in 3000+0 records out 3145728000 bytes (3.1 GB) copied, 239.58 s, 13.1 MB/s plugged it into the sd slot on the Pi, then plugged in the USB keyboard/mouse combo xcvr, plugged in the HDMI/VGA adapter, connected the monitor, plugged in the microUSB cable for power, plugged the other end into the 2.4A cellphone charger, and plugged that into the strip. I'm not linux expert, but should that not be of=/dev/sdb instead of that 1 at the end which implies a partition rather than the device?

That's exactly what happened. I re-wrote the SD card, leaving off the partition, and booted the Rpi3 and was successful - to a point. Activity light, there was text flowing on the screen, the ethernet port is lit, there is currently both the red power LED lit, as well as the green ACT LED lit, but the video went away. :-/
I'd try the sdcard and find a HDMI/DVI monitor, or just plug it into your

W5OMR, et al: Bryan is correct, when you dd an image, it should be to the whole device, not a partition. dd if=RAT_RC1.img of=/dev/sdb bs=1M you may be better off lowering the bs to something like 512k or 128k... some machines don't like high bs, for one reason or another, and there is no way of telling without significant detail. Then, the video disappeared. The Rpi3 is still lit as well as the ethernet port. "Ok. I can get around that. I'll just ssh into the dang thing!" (he said, not realizing his oncoming frustration) The frustrating part - I tried, for the longest, to remember the login credentials for the cable modem to no avail. So, I did an 'arp -a' and found the mac addresses for those connected devices on my network. The only other address that responds to an 'ssh' command, other than this machine (at .106) was one at .103. However, try as I might, the password "debian" (sans quotes) is not recognized. The peculiar thing is, .103 didn't show up in the arp -a list. (head-scratch)

I _think_ the reason your screen went away is because you have not correctly set it up in the /boot/config.txt file on the Pi. Ok. Got the Rpi3 going. Got an IP address. Went to editing on the .conf files. I'll tweak rpt.conf later, but everywhere I can find, modules, iax, rpt, extensions all the default '1999' info was replaced with 29655 and even got my node/password set in ... one of the .conf files (not in front of the machine right now). So, after all was edited and saved, I plugged in my URIx, got a solid green led , I ran astres.sh and ... The green light... Stays solid. Ugh. I feel like I've made significant progress, and thanks for all of you guys help before... But I've not had allstar running in about 3 years and I've forgotten more than I think I knew, back then. I promise... Just a 'bit' more hand-holding, and I have Faith, that when it comes to whatever step I inadvertently left out, I'll smack my forehead and say some colorful metaphors, and kick myself in the keester for forgetting something that I'm sure is going to be "so simple a caveman could do it". Cavemen are Showoffs... ;-)
