The question should be has anybody had success with playing amateur radio news line over their local Allstar node? If so, how did you deal with Timeout timers? On Monday, May 4, 2015, Tim Sawyer <tim.sawyer@mac.com> wrote:

A few years ago I went on this quest. Yes, you could disable the timeout timers with cop commands. I started working on a script that downloaded the News line file, then cut it up into 2:45 segments (with mp3split). Then it checked to see how many segments it had, and built a playlist, with a "You're listening to News line on W3SBA" file after every third or fourth segment. Then another script to play it with opening/closing announcements. Got it work, just not as clean as I wanted. Segment breaks in the middle of sentences, that sort of thing. While working on this, I had News line running on air by connecting to the *NEWSLINE* Echolink conference. After some time I found that nobody was listening to it so I dropped it. The *ECHOLINK* conference gives it to you in suitable segments. You just have to live with the Echolink audio. -- Bob Poff Loganville, Pa
I think disabling time out timers would be best, because a 2 second pause is not enough time to cool down a radio. On Tuesday, May 5, 2015, Bob Poff <wb3awj@comcast.net> wrote:

In the long run, I think that you'll need to come up with a script to do it. Or do the Echolink thing. Since you mention it, I would also wonder about the advisability of running a transmitter that has relatively little heat sink for the 30-40 minutes involved. In my case it's a Mastr II continous duty station that will make 100 watts until the cows come home and not complain. -- Bob Poff Loganville, Pa

I use the controlstates stanza http://ohnosec.org/drupal/node/166 In the default rpt.conf there is already a suitable control state 1 = rptena, lnkena, apdis, totdis, ufena, noice totdis – as you might guess – means timeout timer disabled. You can look up the others. At the end of the bulletin you revert the normal control state, typically this one 0 = rptena, lnkena, apena, totena, ufena, noicd ; Normal operation As previously discussed, you should provide a function for killing the playback, in the event of some urgent need. 73 Ken
I play newsline weekly on our local hub with a script I wrote. It downloads the mpeg file directly from ARN, converts it to wav, and divides it into 2 1/2 minute segments. It then plays the entire broadcast with 15-20 second breaks in between the segments. The segments are overlapped by about 5 seconds for continuity. The script plays pre-warn messages at 5 and 10 minutes before, messages at each break, and an end message. This deals very nicely with ID's and breaks for connections/disconnections of other nodes. Only one segment is in the cue at a time so if necessary stopping the script would stop the playing within 2 1/2 minutes. 73 Doug WA3DSP http://www.crompton.com/hamradio Date: Mon, 4 May 2015 21:00:58 -0600 From: electricity440@gmail.com To: tim.sawyer@mac.com CC: app_rpt-users@ohnosec.org Subject: Re: [App_rpt-users] force unkey The question should be has anybody had success with playing amateur radio news line over their local Allstar node?
