What Skyler is saying is that in that audio clip, Crompton is saying the problem with IRLP is that it's one guy controlling it, without being open source. It's rather hypocritical of him to say that, when you consider his *distribution* is not open-source either. I'm enjoying being back on the "real" AllStar softare (RAT_RC1) for my private node - and hoping to be able to convert my repeater back over to DIAL as well! Alright! This conversation has gone on long enough, and most of the comments I have read, are being stated by folks who have yet to bother to check the facts. I have yet to ascertain what the point of this thread is, throwing crap at someone, blaming others for what *you* are doing. IRLP is run by Dave Cameron, who, several years ago, has stated under no circumstance will his beloved IRLP be interconnected with Allstarlink. Why this is, is beyond my caring, if you want to know the truth, then ask Dave your self and not speculate. Crompton's version of Allstarlink software is based on Asterisk, which is open source. If you don't like what he is doing, then build your own! ~Benjamin, KB9LFZ On Wed, 2017-07-12 at 23:17 -0500, Jeremy Utley wrote:

Crompton's version of Allstarlink software is based on Asterisk, which is open source. If you don't like what he is doing, then build your own!
That is actually the point. Doug refuses to release the source code for the version of Asterisk/Apt_Rpt that he is releasing as binary, in violation of the GPL license. And anyone who points that out to him gets attacked. Doug's image was probably great when there was no image for the Pi, but now that there is that image, rather than fracture the community, he should be helping to make the official pi image better. It's his right not to do so, but all that does is fracture the community around AllStarLink. Jeremy

Absolutely not. We all benefit from the work Mark Spencer and many others did in creating Asterisk. If you really want to pursue this...then the original holder of the intellectual property rights to Asterisk and issuer of the GPL (Digium) should be contacted and your concerns made known regarding release of the source code, which is required when executables are released. I am assuming that the rights to the app-rpt module are, like the core, GPL'd, but held by the inheritor of Jim's IP. Now, they can re-write from scratch the repeater module, but if they are basing it on the non-commercial Open Source version of Asterisk, then Digium's restrictions and requirements should be respected. That's what Digium has counsel for. It's not up to us, per se, to manage, but the holder of the intellectual property rights to the software. We can flail around and stamp our feet, but, in reality have no standing to force the issue--Digium does--which is why complaints to the other party get blown off. So, if it is THAT important, the owner of the rights (and it's not us, not the other party) should be consulted as to how THEY will enforce their intellectual property right. Just a thought. I'm not an intellectual property (or other) lawyer, nor do I play one on TV. But, I stayed in a Holiday Inn once. BB On 7/13/2017 9:27 AM, Pierre Martel wrote:

Agreed - if he bought a commercial license from digium AND he implemented apt_rpt in such a way that he used nobody else's GPL'ed code, then he would not be bound by the GPL and would not have to release the source code. I use a local IRLP repeater to link up with folks who don't have Allstar (gasp! :-) One of the many reasons I like DIAL is the option to setup my own node(s). IRLP requires their access to your node to set it up and register, a process I have experienced first hand, and don't like ( not exactly the spirit of amateur radio I've come to enjoy and respect. To all the true Elmers out there, thanks much for all you do. Another reason I like DIAL is the fact I understand the Linux platform better than others. It is a lot like CentOS, which I first learned. One of the difficulties I've had with other "types" of Linux is the customized and undocumented features that make my experience awkward, to say the least. There is also the fact the system established and setup by "The Duuuude" and team is still the basis for the seamless operation of Allstar, regardless of what version of app_rpt used. I am pleased to see that original team spirit continues to be alive and well in the Allstarlink community, for which I continue to be thankful. In Doug's defense, this is a hobby, and like many volunteer based Linux applications, finished documentation is usually the last thing to get done. I have learned a lot from him, but then again, I'm still very much in a learning mode from all of you, even from many of the questions, which get to me to thinking beyond my own little problems :-) Thanks, Bob k6ecm 73 Sent from iPad

This is the reason why I started to really want the source to Dougs image: 1. I wanted to apply a couple small customizations to App_rpt.c 2. I wanted a better simpleusb driver for the raspberry pi without the delay. usbradio does not work well as of now on a pi, and simpleusb receiver delay is not constant changes each transmission. The current DIAL distro does not fix the simpleusb or usbradio problems in the raspberry pi because they don't want to have to duplicate Doug's work. (Yes, you have to be picky like me about audio and timing to tell on some of it) Doug's image does not release the source code, so I can't complete my customizations. One of the many reasons I like DIAL is the option to setup my own node(s).
I have learned a lot from him, but then again, I'm still very much in a learning mode from all of you, even from many of the questions, which get to me to thinking beyond my own little problems :-)

This is the reason why I started to really want the source to Dougs image:
1. I wanted to apply a couple small customizations to App_rpt.c 2. I wanted a better simpleusb driver for the raspberry pi without the delay. usbradio does not work well as of now on a pi, and simpleusb receiver delay is not constant changes each transmission.

<-- You're not alone Skyler. Hang tight, I am optimistic that there will be something coming to allow you to use usbradio (with demph / squelched RX audio) as an alternative to simpleusb (and thus eliminate the audio delay), very soon! I've been doing quite a bit of testing between simpleusb and usbradio on DIAL..... and I (personally) find that usbradio sounds better and has more dynamic range (with TX audio) than simpleusb. Some folks will say the opposite... "beauty is in the eye [or ear] of the beholder" ;). Remembering our dear friend, Jim Dixon, WB6NIL, Cheers, Ramesh.
OK, So this "discussion" has go on for about a week. Face it, other then venting, and somewhat preaching to the choir, nothing has been accomplished. Other then AllStarLink (ASL) abiding by the license for Asterisk, we have no standing. It's up to Asterisk to enforce it's license. I am as much a advocate of open source and HAM radio as anybody, but it's time to end this. Do I disagree with David's and Doug's (HAMVIOP) decision to not open the source to their version of Asterisk? YES. Is there anything we can do about it? NO. David says he that he is following Jim's wishes. What I have been told by David is that Jim told him if he did not like what Jim was doing, fork it. So he did. That's just fine with us. We moved the source code from SVN to GIT to allow ANYONE to submit changes to the code. David submitted one bug fix directly to me and I included it in the repository. Mike N4IRR is the team leader for development. Yes, he is my brother. We have been building FM voice repeaters for the last 48 years. We work well together (most of the time) and we know how to compliment each others talents. Mike has been a professional "software guy" for the last 37 years. The other team members for the most part asked to be part of the team. They each bring a wealth of knowledge inside and outside of ASL. They stepped up and are willing to work with others in the best interest of ASL and HAM radio. All of the team members have to work well within the team and with the other teams where they intersect. Saying that you want to help is one thing, actually doing something is another. We do not just add people to teams. We look to attitude, skill and actually doing something for ASL. The organization has been built to survive the loss of any one or more people. We are no longer a one man band. I have been told that HAMVIOP thinks that the management of ASL is partisan. I think that is really directed at me. Am I an advocate for ASL? Yes. Do I try to run ASL in the best interests of the HAM community? Yes. I have opened the management teams to anyone that has said they have a interest and a skill to volunteer. HAMVIOP has told me in the past they don't think much of my capabilities. I have said in the past that I don't think much of their attitude towards anyone else working on ASL. I'll call that even. To conclude, ASL is open source and will always be so. If others want to not publish their changes, that is not our concern. Leave that to Asterisk. What we can do as a community is to support the open source efforts and the hardware vendors that provide the equipment we need to make ASL the finest HAM repeater / linking software available. I will not censor users on the list until I think someone has repeatedly crossed the line. Please end this. I now return you to your regularly scheduled mail list. 73, Steve N4IRS

The following comments are mine - and not of AllStarLink Inc. I see that the HamVoip distribution 1.5 has telemetry ducking. This feature set was designed by me and implemented by a friend into a different distribution. I paid to have this done, and understood that it would be made available to the public by the terms of Open Source. If HamVoip doesn't make their entire source code available, I will be informing Digium of this violation. While Digium no longer supports the app_rpt application, they certainly do the Asterisk Project. If the HamVoip folks haven't signed an agreement, then shame on them. Just because Digium is no longer supporting this application doesn't mean they don't still own it. It's still under Digium's control, and using any part of Asterisk obligates them to follow the terms of Open Source: https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/AST/License+Information If HamVoip had their own commercial license, they would be making people sign an agreement for its use. I'm not aware of any such requirement. If Digium doesn't enforce the terms of Open Source, I'll be heading up a team (outside AllStarLink Inc.) that will. This is wrong - plain and simple. It goes against everything that Jim Dixon, Steve RoDgers, and Steve Henke (among others) have done. I don't use HamVoip for several reasons. Some of these reasons are personal, just like this situation that begs questioning as to why they wont release it. Are they hiding something? Are they planning to use it for-profit? They certainly are willing to take credit for code they didn't write, and that's not right.... All releases of Asterisk and app_rpt have (or should have) included in the header of the code the licensing requirements. I'm not just making this up, go have a look at the (real) source code for yourself. Those of you wanting them to release it, keep bugging them. If they continue to deny the requests, let me know - duuuude! Kevin Custer - W3KKC
One of the things I love about open source code is that I can try to compile and build it for other platforms. I currently run app-rpt/Asterisk on a Google Compute cloud platform as a hub. Previously I ran it on Amazon AWS. Both are virtualized cloud services. If it weren't because I have access to the source code, I could not build/install in those environments. As for the HamVOIP "code", it is useless for me because I have no source code. I can only run it on a Raspbery Pi image they provide. Just like IRLP, you are locked in to a specific platform. And I like building my own custom images. Back to compiling for the ASUS Tinkerboard... 73! On 7/12/2017 11:02 PM, Skyler F wrote:
