Looking for a way of creating, modifying, and playing u-law audio files on Win7

I'm looking for a way of creating, modifying, and playing u-law audio files on Win7. I've found several the web says will work, including Audacity, but have not been able to get them to work... what am I missing? Thanks, Bob kk6ecm

All, Thank you for all of the information and diagrams, it will give me a great place to start! Tim, do you happen to know what older versions of Quantar FW may have issues? Both of our machines have 16.xx or so, and I don't believe our SCM's are upgradable. No TX through URI

I just put together a Allstar node and connected it to a local uhf repeater. I am using a DMK URI and interface cable connected to a RLC controller (club deluxe 2) The system works well on incoming traffic from the node, but will not pass ptt or outgoing audio from the repeater. I have checked the configuration on the controller port and it all looks ok. I need some help? Scott

You can add a fixed delay in the config that will be greater than the networks' latency, so as to mask problems so they don't appear at on the repeaters as "problems". My prediction is the VLAN will be sufficient, but the VPN will suffer connectivity problems. I've never really seen a reliable PPP based VPN - they are regularly up and down for seemingly no reason at all. Cue regular unexplained dropouts for some 2-200 seconds with no real chance at diagnosis. Frankly, I don't like VLANs either - rather plain ol' ethernet or directly routed IP is best, and avoid all the trickery-doo on top of the real thing. Sounds like you're having fun with that. ;) Steve

I changed the subject :) I don't think that the 1 PPS GPS will work for this. You need a GPSDO with a 10 MHZ output that then drives something like the micro-node.com PGCM that then generates the exact clock frequency that your transmitter needs. I do not know if they are still selling it or if there are similar products available from other sources. I am also interested in simulcast but have been looking for an economical way to do it. Thank you Jon Rorke for a well thought out reply. You hit the nail on the head and I haven't seen anything on this topic. That's why I asked. I have a Motorola MSF's and a Motorola MSR that have a VCO input and I was curious how to interface to it for simulcasting. I also have Motorola GPS receiver modules that plug into the repeaters. I sincerely apologize if some find this message thread as stupid, based on private emails, but not knowing where or who to ask I thought that this was the correct mailing list. Is there an easier way that as a noob with Allstar I just don't know about yet? If I read you correctly any GPS that provides a 1pps output provides the VCO locking in some form but is there a tutorial or a HOWTO that discusses this? I have a TKR-850 that I want to use as well and I'm not aware of a VCO input. If ya'll could just point me in the right direction I'd be much appreciative. I appreciate your helpful answer.
