... and some 'crow' consumed per prior rant ... (trust me, does not taste like chicken, no matter how much tabasco...) Issues and Challenges Taken Head-On... and some Take-Aways - download and try to 'build' node(s) with prior or latest build- 'bad' supply, new low voltage errors - enjoy the ease of asl-menu- why doesn't it recognize my eth0 and RA-40? We often hear "bad card..." - despite indeed some "bad card" attempts, changing methods allowed 'bad' cards to work. Probably NOT a bad SD card or in my case USB sticks. So far we can't even tell what specs/speed, etc. absolutely will work, absolutely will NOT work, or might work. We don't even know what internal schemes card makers employ in their products. I'm checking out a couple of supposed flash memory device diagnostics to see if anything might be obvious. I'm thinking a full-write and verify utility like h2testw (https://www.heise.de/download/product/h2testw-50539) may help - perhaps as a card 'conditioner' before writing an image to stick. This will not be a short-delivery cycle diversion... - I've variously used Win32DiskImager or Etcher in a wonderful Win10 workstation-class main PC... may be time to re-think that (haven't looked at Rufus, or unetbootin, etc. yet) and either seems to yield various results... but it's not very clear/apparent that various other system disk and USB I/O operations or just how Windows handles all of this. - before firing up a 'proper' Linux system to do all this with, or just use Raspbian on the Pi itself, I dug out my MacBook Air and Applepi-baker... which has proven quite consistent, reliable and happiness through over a dozen 'stick'/card image writes and saving images to reproduce to save time making other new nodes. I know - who just happens to have a 'dusty' MacBook laying about? Point is - is the problem Windows? The box x-nix is running on, or what? Not quite sure. - Bottom-line - unless you have a platform and tool you KNOW works, don't totally shame Windows - not there yet. "It's Your Power Supply..." - no, no it's not, unless/until it IS... whether using a generic USB-wart of 1.5A, *the* accompanying 2.5A 'wart' with many Pi kits, or a PowerWerx USB Buddy 5v 3A DC device ... "low voltage error" still can/has appeared out of nowhere with clean 5.1v into the MicroUSB. I've had no less than 4.93 at the connected RA-40 and 4.96 at the Pi - clean, scoped, flat DC. The Pi should not 'react' until 4.65v. - if we determine, somehow, that there is something imposing noise on the 5v bus or the Pi's internal 3.3v... maybe we can preempt this with a suitably placed add-on filter or two. TBD. "asl-menu didn't work..." - AH-HA! Big thanks to Steve and Nate for sleuthing this one FAST! - First take-away - start fresh - do NOT import any config files from "some other builds" - Yet to be identified, parsed, handled is what the custom/undocumented (?) non-ASL configuration items are... (but certainly there are standard parameter lines we built and want... save those off and bring them in one at a time after you have a good basic working node...) - Even with a fresh start... well, see next point... - It didn't know what to configure for 'eth0' because in some x-nix flavors, and the Pi, 'eth0' does not exist, but 'enxab12cd34ef56' does - the adapter "enx+MACaddress" - I don't know how or if this can be resolved... 'ifconfig' is your friend to get the 'NIC' identity to use for manual IP configuration steps. "Why doesn't Asterisk/rpt see my radio interface device?" - I don't have an answer for this one... back to the "bad SD card" conundrum perhaps... ------------------------------- Once I worked around and through the various challenges, I have established one good working node as a reference platform to clone, reproduce, edit, and deploy as a consistent upgrade for 4+ other nodes in our system. I captured a working image with ApplePi-baker and made 6 additional core working sticks. Onward! The goal is to off-load a handful of $400+ equally-oddly-custom-programmed multi-port controllers to reduce rack space, variables, power consumption... most interfaced with RA-35 or RA-40, and testing a newish comprehensive "pi-hat" out of Canada. I'm still working through a couple of points - mostly "cheat sheet" items to try and contribute yet-another-AllStar-how-to (OMG!) I've got 6-8 others lying about and they are all 'challenging' in many points - too assuming of knowledge of x-nix, paths, logs, scripts, permissions, skipping steps, apt-get, etc. This is a $35 platform 10-year-olds get to work making robots and media servers... we can do this... yes? Back to the rest of my 'crow' and following through. Thanks for listening.

AllStarLink procedure for Raspbian Stretch

I followed the procedure stated on Question 4 under the AllStarLink Wiki onto my Raspberry Pi 3B+ with Debian Stretch. First signs of deviation from the normal output I saw that, since I had installed the CompassLinux repository to install ambeserver, as I gave the command to install the raspberry pi kernel headers, the kernels had the compass attached to the version numbers of the archives being installed. I configured the node for dahdi/pseudo use. I ran the command asterisk -c to see the initial output, output below. OSS Free ASL with URIx

Started a new thread since the old one was hijacked a little bit.. At any rate, I have a current raspbian kernal (without OSS) and I have done the following: 1. disabled onboard audio (just blacklisting the KM for the device) 2. configured ALSA to use the C-Media device (URIx) for default audio 3. installed pulseaudio 4. installed osspd 5. start pulseaudio 6. stard osspd defining --adsp as dsp1 and as a padsp slave 7. start asterisk It's not perfect yet, but I do have ASL receiving audio from the URIx and transmitting audio through the URIx.. it's not clear audio.. maybe audio levels? Also note that there i an osspd-alsa but that doesn't work.. when I try that it causes the usb closed errors that I had posted in the other thread and ASL won't get past that point. Unfortunately the site is far enough away that I can't get to the device and put it on the bench.. a user is reporting that "tones" are what he is hearing after he unkeys If I can figure out the rest I'll be publishing all of the things that need to be edited to 'get-er-done' until then I'll be playing with it... any input/ideas/feedback is welcome!

Our team has identified and fixed every issue which has been brought to our attention. There is always room for improvement and we're continually working to this end. We are improving the current infrastructure to eliminate single points of failure. There are new geo-redundant registration servers in test with a clustered database backend. DNS has been migrated to this cluster of servers and has been running without fail for months. As AllStar supports a diverse userbase; many running older distributions at remote sites who desire stability, our admin team must operate with stability as the highest priority. As such we cannot make sweeping changes to critical network infrastructure without extensive testing. The registration and database servers have uptimes approaching a year, and have been continually available during this time. These servers are responsible for the nodes list, which is distributed to redundant public facing servers and on to users AllStar nodes. Even in the event of an outage during maintenance, the node list simply stops updating for a time. While inconvenient to nodes registering during this window, the vast majority of nodes are still able to link with this older node list. Our admin team has built a new stats server and are working on a new portal. By the way, we have been successfully processing ID and node requests on this new portal for months and have received very positive feedback on its new node list. We added a new node map and performance improvements to the stats server. MediaWiki has been installed with advanced search, a WYSIWYG editor, and other plugins, enabling anyone to create or update documentation. The Drupal site at docs.allstarlink.org is migrating as editors time permits. Our distribution has been updated including ASL 1.01 to run on the latest OS and has many improvements. More improvements are under active development. We're always open to assistance, whether it be design work, admin/support team help, or a completely new feature created by a code contributor. There were a few tweaks that I had to make within pulseaudio in terms of some buffer values and the correct sample rate and boom, I have clean audio now without the use of OSS which means I can have an updated kernel! While there are a few different moving parts, it's actually somewhat trivial.. I'll put together directions if anyone else cares lol... IAXRPT

Looking for some help setting up IAXPRT on our club's AWS ASL node. I edited the iax.conf and the extensions.conf. I made sure the IAX ports were open on the AWS instance. When I try connecting from the Windows client it says calling and the state has a "?" in it. Eventually it drops out. First, apologies for what ended up coming out as a rant that 'got' to a few people. Not my intention... I tried to be casual/conversational and that doesn't work in-type. As a result I did get a different perspective on the history of AllStar developments... :O *** Steve: thanks for the specific log locations... I'll fetch and send them soonest. If there are common known errors and clues to "yup, bad card..." or "check x.conf and y.conf for consistency of z parameter" - I'm more than willing to start documenting log tidbits, clues, etc. for the 'KB' effort. (when I designed software I did ask the developers to spit out details once in awhile so we knew when function X crapped out... "wow, you know we can do that? CRAP!") In a production support realm, when you see a trend of 10... 20 similar issues, you start looking to how-to, KB, or systematic remote fixes to relieve the support team of production issues. As the back-end person pushing apps and updates the last thing *I* want is end-user calls/e-mails for the easy stuff... I have my own images, patches, packages and deployments to work on and annoy the user base on "Patch Tuesday"... the help desk knows better than to 'dox' me out to the users... :O *** Mike, you asked: "Could you state what the 'first few' commands are on 1st boot with your new image ? ...mike/kb8jnm" What am I looking for? The boot process of course dumps a ton of initialization info... What I type in? I go for "sudo asl-menu"
