[App_rpt] CPU Load
by John Yaldwyn 27 Oct '08

27 Oct '08

Hi All, Recently there was a brief discussion as to CPU performance. Over the weekend I had the opportunity to look at the CPU loading of two systems I run. Both systems are built from the ACID distribution with the following changes: Node update script disabled Sendmail disabled Digium G.729 codec loaded Admin and Webmin interfaces disabled Required modules only loaded Neither system uses Iptables and both are located behind Linksys BEFSR41 routers with fixed IP addresses. 'netstat -ta' shows only the SIP, IAX2, and SSH ports open. Both systems uses IBM Serve RAID hardware RAID level 1 using 18GB 15K RPM drives. System 1 consists of an IBM x345 single CPU PIII-S 1.133MHz Server with 512KB cache and 2GB RAM. 'less /proc/cpuinfo' shows BOGOMIPS of 2257. 'top' shows and idle CPU load of 10% for asterisk and negligible load for any other process. 'free' reports about 419KB used. 'swapon -s' reports swap space usage of 0. With on USB connected repeater active (ongoing voice conversation) and an independent voice call set up using a Linksys SIP telephone set using A law codec connected to a service provider using IAX2 and G.729 top showed a peak load of 22%. System 2 consists of an IBM x345 single XEON 2GHz HT capable Server with 512KB cache and 2 GB RAM. 'less /proc/cpuinfo' shows BOGOMIPS of 3990. 'top' shows and idle CPU load of 6% for asterisk and negligible load for any other process. 'free' reports about 500KB used. 'swapon -s' reports swap space usage of 0. With on USB connected repeater active (ongoing voice conversation) and an independent voice call set up using a Linksys SIP telephone set using A law codec connected to a service provider using IAX2 and G.729 top showed a peak load of 17%. Looking at the numbers the higher performance XEON system seems to have made only a marginal improvement at what is admittedly a light load. But what is more interesting it appears that relatively modest PIII boxes are fully capable of managing the single repeater type applications without resporting to something like Limey. Perhaps PIII 500MHz or more, 768MB RAM, and 2GB or more disk as a working minimum spec. Note that the Anaconda installer used for CENTOS in ACID seems to have problems loading with just 512MB of RAM. I would be interesetd to hear from anyone running such a configuration. Using the simple shell comands shown in single quotes above provides a quick system overview for basic performance evaluation. Cheers, John ZL4JY

Re: [App_rpt] asterisk console commands missing?
by John Yaldwyn 20 Oct '08

Hi Eric, The correct command is now 'sip reload', same as 'iax2 reload', 'rpt reload', etc. The only odd man out is 'dialplan reload', you'd expect 'extensions reload' if you're like me. The best way to remember is just to type 'help sip' or 'help rpt' to get the correct command list. If the commands are missing then it means that either the relevant '.conf' files don't exist (maybe empty) OR the modules.conf file is wrong. Try 'module show' there should be at least 43 modules shown and for a normal ACID install I think it is well over a hundred. If you look at the modules.conf file it should have as a minimum: [global] [modules] autoload=yes noload= chan_alsa.so If you have that and there are still missing modules after a 'module reload' then there are a bunch of things missing from /usr/lib/asterisk/modules and something has gone terribly wrong. Try a restart now from the CLI. [App_rpt] Possible Bug (Locked to TX several hours).
by Ken Page 19 Oct '08

19 Oct '08

Hi Guys I thought I should report the following as a possible Bug. I dialed up the following Echolink node last night to help out with Jota in the area and left it running over night. *33 138203 (JOTA-E). When I went to check it again today at about 2PM the Transmitter was locked on solid and there was no Audio. I checked the asterisk box to see that Asterisk has dropped out with an error and the DMK dongle had left the Transceiver locked on TX. :( Both the Green and the Red lights of the DMK Dongle were on Solid (Not Flashing).. Here is what was on the screen --- [Oct 18 21:55:51] NOTICE[6389]: chan_echolink.c:2333 el_reader: Name changed from (Conference [9/33]) CONF to (Conference ) CONF [Oct 18 21:55:52] WARNING[6498]: codec_gsm.c:144 gsmtolin_framein: Invalid GSM data (1) [Oct 18 21:55:52] WARNING[6498]: translate.c:211 framein: gsmtolin did not update samples 0 shazam*CLI> Disconnected from Asterisk server --- I think this is the only relevent bit. [App_rpt] ACID update procedure to install latest version of Asterisk
by Stephen Rodgers 18 Oct '08

18 Oct '08

A later version of asterisk is available for ACID installs. These upgrade instructions must be followed to the letter. 1. Change directories to /root 2. If you don't have an astupd.sh file STOP. Your ACID install is too old and you will need to do a fresh install which will install the latest version automatically. If you have to re-install, make a backup of your config files in /etc/asterisk so that you can restore them to the new install. 3. If you have an astupd.sh file, you will need to update it by downloading a new version. Use the following wget command from the /root directory to do this: wget http://dl.allstarlink.org/installcd/astupd.sh 4. Once the new script is downloaded, type: ./astupd.sh 5. Your system will now be updated. Wait for the download and compile to complete. 6. Reboot your system and check to see that your node is functioning properly. Steve WA6ZFT

Grabbed them from a test installation I did on a VMware virtual machine. At this time, doing a complete OS installation is not an option, as none of my systems will be standalone Asterisk boxes. 73 de VK3JED http://vkradio.com
