Is anyone here using the FreeStar software? http://www.va3uv.com/freestar.htm They claim Allstar interconnectivity. What are your comments? ================================ My main comment is: it works fine. The page you reference talks about how you can take an asterisk installation and add DSTAR to it (or you can install it from scratch). There are a couple of different versions of the DSTAR repeater software. If you are clever, you can have a repeater that switches between analog and digital. But a couple FreeStar nodes (including one that I run) have cross-connect capability. I run two FreeStar nodes here, one of which is always linked to my app_rpt "cluster" (the other is linked to "real" DSTAR reflectors and has no analog). The cross connection is done using the combination of an RTPDir channel driver (still supported by app_rpt) and a KI4LKF "dextra client". The Client connects to my DSTAR reflector (X-Reflector) and does the A/D D/A conversion using a DVDongle. The FreeStar digital node connects to the same X-Reflector as the bridge node and that is how the cross-connect is accomplished. If the analog audio has good quieting, then things work quite well. Audio is better than an ICOM radio and microphone, to my ear. If the analog is noisy, then the digital side becomes hard to copy, as you would expect. (Because my X-Reflector has a non-public IP, there is no way for the analog bridge to be coupled to some DSTAR repeater, or reflector, other than my own). 73 Ken

Limey

Getting soooooooooo frustrated trying to compile Limey. Have tried 1.1.5, 1.1.2, 1.0.9, 1.0.8, 1.0.7 keep getting similar but somewhat varying errors usually regarding texi. I have fixed two make file issues that are wrong in the buildroot distro. SO, I thought, maybe go and build the latest buildroot separately. IT has makefile or .config file problems. Now I know I was able to do this in the past, maybe 3 years ago. That linux box I used crashed, drive went 10-7. So new one has Slackware 14, no dice on Limey/buildroot, tried Ubuntooo 14, 12, also same errors. I saw Steve Rogers one time asked them about these same errors. But I see no fixes beyond references to un-obtainable patch files. So most basic question is this: what platform has successfully built these particular Limey sources? Oh yeah, one more point was a suggestion to turn off the making of text files, since some of the errors surround that. Where? The config files in buildroot have three places for document, info manual files on/off, all set to off... And people wonder why Microsoft has been successful... simpleusb vs. usbradio

The Baofeng question brings up a good point, the fallacy that you need to use usbradio to have good audio. This is just not the case in fact in many cases simpleusb offers much better audio. Whether you pre/deemphasize in the radio or in SW is really inconsequential. Both do the same thing. The idea that speaker audio is bad is a misnomer. Yes, speaker audio taken from the speaker would be problematic but taken from the high side of the volume pot or somewhere before that in the circuit after deemphasis would be no problem. The fact that the Acid release installs configured for usbradio means that most just use that mode. The simpleusb.conf file is not even in /etc/asterisk and one has to search for it and also the docs on using it. simpleusb would work just fine for most people and would probably be a good choice for newcomers to Allstar. You do need COS or CTCSS and PL decode in the radio but in most cases that is readily available and is no big deal. Some of the worst audio I have heard on the Allstar network is from usbradio. This is often detected as distortion in the audio caused by the DSP functions. I can only speculate on where it comes from but it seems to happen more often, but not always, when processor power is lacking. It is a very distinct distortion and when you hear it you can tell the node is using usbradio. And yes there are some features in usbradio like squelch tail elimination, etc. that are nice but personally I have never had a need for them. 73 Doug WA3DSP http://www.crompton.com/hamradio

Absolutely. Not only simpleusb and usbradio, but you can also have any number of other channel drivers on the same server including chan_voter (for RTCMs) and the PCI card. Troubles with downloading node configuration.

Due to multiple problems, I have reinstalled the entire system using the Disc I created. Everything was going ok until I got to the part where I had to download my configuration from the allstar link network. I entered in my call-sign and password, and when it proceeded to download the configuration file, it said "FATAL ERROR COULD NOT MODIFY" (it may have said more but I didn't catch it, and it disappeared" So now I am stuck with this root@test login... I logged in as root and ran nodesetup.sh, and the screen returned this: Downloading server Skylersnode... Failed to download and unpack configuration files Allstar Link Portal Config Download Failed .. exiting I thought the password was incorrect, but when I tried a random password, it returned an incorrect password dialog. I thought something went wrong in the install, so I tried to reinstall it, but that did not help. I went to the portal, and clicked "DOWNLOAD CONFIGURATION" to see if that would do anything, but it returned this : "Sorry, your server does not have any downloadable nodes (Register Only)." Does this mean anything or does it just mean I don't have a computer set up currently, which was true because the computer was shut off and could not download the portal config files. I do not see what is going on because 1) I am running everything on the same computer I had up before 2) I have not made any modifications to my online portal 3) I have the same network connection as before 4) I tried a reinstall of the entire thing several times. RTCM Time

Is there a way to offset the time when the Server has a two RTCM’s in the Pacific Time Zone then another one located in another times zone so the announcements are correct?

Hello all. I have 2 Nodes here an RTCM on node 28467 and a Beagle xM/LOX combo on node 29701 The RTCM works real well, no problems at all, but, the Beagle xM on the other hand has a one little issue I can’t seem to fix, can’t been seen in the database. Reading the mail on this list the past few weeks and this same issue has already been raised, I see that I cannot have 2 different Nodes with the same port ( 4569 ) running on the same IP, they have to have unique port numbers. To that end I have left the RTCM on port 4569 but I have moved the Beagle xM to port 4568. Having done that to the Beagle xM I went in to the iax.conf and changed the bindport there, then I went in to allstarlink.org and changed the port number there too and submitted the changes. The Beagle xM now works fairly well, I can make outgoing calls AND it can receive incoming calls also but the Beagle xM ( node 29701 ) is not seen to everyone, no longer in the database. The router I use here at home is a Netgear DGND3700 and it doesn’t seem to allow the Beagle to be registered in the database, but when I test the Beagle on another router I have, a TP link 3G the Beagle is seen by everyone and it looks like it is in the database. I believe there are a few routers that do give a bit of trouble, and the Admins can do something to help get Nodes registered so I think I am in need of their help at this point, if no-one else has any other suggestions. Echolink Node Numbers

Good Evening All I am currently setting up my node and am looking at connecting it to my Echolink node running separately at this moment. However, the new node number I have been given is 7 digits long, not 6 and I cannot connect to it via Allstar. No I could stump $15 for a 5 digit number but I guess this problem will reoccur for others. Does anyone know how this can be altered so it can accept 7 digits?
