Re: [App_rpt-users] Allstar Node

Hey Rodger, Unfortunately, I don't have a document for building a Allstar with a radio. The first article on my website covers a Allstar to DMR bridge and setting up a radioless Allstar hub. However, I bought a Yellow box from George WB3DZZ. He has taken those BF radios apart and made his connections to that and the sound cards his nodes also come with the HamVoip software. He may can give you some tips since you have most all the pieces. Otherwise, I would point you to the Allstar email list. I like the HamVoip software but you can run ASL as well on a Raspberry Pi. here are the emails for both groups: HamVoip: arm-allstar(a)hamvoip.org Web: https://hamvoip.org ASL: app_rpt-users(a)lists.allstarlink.org Web: https://allstarlink.org Hope that helps let me know if you have any questions. 73, Russell Thomas, KV4S Cell: 205.202.1701 DMR Private: 3101393 DMR TG: 31013 D-Star Call Route (UR): KV4S D-Star: XRF334C AllStar: 47923 IRLP: 4535 EchoLink: KV4S-L (1003254) HamShackHotline: 614 Web: http://KV4S.com On Tue, Dec 25, 2018 at 9:45 PM Rodger Hanson <rodger_hanson(a)slingshot.co.nz> wrote: > Hello Russell > > I was put onto you from a fellow ham here in New Zealand, that said you > had a very good document on how to put together an allstar node. > > I have a Raspberry Pi 3, and couple of BF888s radios and two USB sound > cards, but not sure on the software to put onto the raspberry pi 3 and > how to connect it all. > > Would you mind sharing you document if one should exist? > > Have a Merry Christmas and happy New Year. > > 73 de Rodger - ZL1RAH > >

I am always surpized how many hams embrace the self-policing for amateur radio, but fail to see the similarities with the GNU Public License (GPL) for software. We as hams have the public trust for billions of dollars worth of spectrum. However, this comes with strings attached, in that we must promote and expand radio technology, and abide by certain rules. So when there are people who jam some nets, or use the spectrum inappropriately, WE take action to address it. Only in the most eggregious of cases does the FCC actually have to take an enforcement action. Just so with the GPL. I as a software developer have the benefit of billions of dollars worth of free software - a free compiler, a free operating system, and yes Jim Dixon's amazing work on Asterisk, all of which is covered by the GPL. Generally the software community self-enforces the GPL, and in the vast majority of cases, it is as simple as releasing the code. I do this because it is my obligation under the GPL, but I also license new work under the GPL because other people help improve what I started, and I still largely get the credit for it. Had the authors of Asterisk said: "We will not release the source code, but we will do a fantastic job in making sure Asterisk does all the things you want it to do", then Asterisk would have remain a telephone system. Only because they released the source code were hams able to extend it to do repeater linking. Only in rare cases where people continue to flaunt the GPL does it take a lawsuit to compel compliance, and these rarely go to trial because the cost of compliance is so trivial - just release the source code and you are in compliance! However, just like it sometimes takes the FCC to make sure that people comply with the conditions of their ham license, sometimes it takes legal action to force compliance with the GPL. In the end the GPL (just like our ham priviliges) is a social contract. We are granted an enormously valuable resource on the understanding that we will abide by a simple rule: you have to make your contribution freely available to others. So I sure hope that this doesn't turn into a lawsuit. That only serves to make lawyers rich. But in the end, it seems to me that the open source model has proven to be much more successful in the long run. I and many others have been able to make a decent living despite making our software available not just free of charge but free to improve. And in the process I have benefitted both in terms of getting credit for my contributions as well as well as from the clever things others have contributed to software I wrote. We don't have to be ugly about it and call people names. But the GPL is pretty black and white about the issue of releasing the source code. I don't know of a single case where somebody has eventually prevailed in arguing that you can start with GPL code and then refuse to release the source for the improvements. The GPL always wins out in the end. -Willem ================================================================ Dr. Willem A. It?s only AMATEUR radio. If it disappeared tomorrow, the world would neither be better nor worse off, in truth. If the legal and moral owners of the copyrights have no inclination to fight it or enforce their rights, in the end, does it really matter what anyone who has no rights to the software thinks? Echolink...got it working...
by George Csahanin 27 Dec '18

27 Dec '18

Loaded new style modules.conf (still didn't work) then went back to my original modules file with a load statement for echolink and it worked. Then again at the same time I changed the email address in the echolink.conf file...,aybe that was it Thanks anyhow. Now to figure why Allmon stopped on the same node. TECHNICAL QUESTION re: Echolink
by George Csahanin 27 Dec '18

27 Dec '18

I have not been paying attention and may have missed something. But... having problem opening echolink port. This has worked in the past but I disabled by removing the config file. But is there anything else in app_rpt that could inhibit Echolink? My config file looks correct in my 2360 and 28599 boxes. But when doing netstat I don't see the three ports open. Somebody have a nudge in the right direction? GeorgeC W2DB 2360, 28599 -- George Csahanin 10100 Carson Ranch Rd. Crowley, TX 76036 682-708-5716 home 401-338-0568 cel

iaxRPT updates
by Dan Keizer 25 Dec '18

25 Dec '18

HI there - I noticed there's been some discussion on some upcoming updates to the iaxRPT program. I've used this with the hamvoip distribution and dvswitch distros and it works well for accessing your node remotely. I mostly use iaxrpt on my android system while mobile, but I've used it occasionally with windows. Anyways -- there has been an upgrade to the android public version. The dvswitch-mobile version (with lots of new features :-) ) will be public released in a couple of days ... looking forward to the new features. 73, Dan ve4drk

Greetings of the season to all. Over the past year I have been unsuccessful at getting an installation to Allstar Asterisk to function. I even tried the, excuse me, Ham VOIP version and did not have any luck with that either. I have tried the X86 version and the Raspberry version. Yes I installed the X86 version on an old Dell laptop. The Pi version was on a Pi 3, with a 16GB card. Is there or can someone create a step by step guide for installation? Do not say all you have to do is follow the setup script. That did not work for me. The material on the website is very confusing to me. I only want to set up a simple remote base. I have the RMK URI. The radio I am using is a Motorola CDM1500 LS. 73 Tom AD2TM
